Pamela, I've spent some time reflecting on what exactly a Trump presidency means and how important Common Cause's efforts will be in the next few weeks, months and years.
I wanted to share this with you to provide some hope and to demonstrate why you should join us:
In the next few weeks, Trump will continue announcing his transition team, his cabinet appointments, and policy priorities. We've already seen the influence of Project 2025, an initiative designed to weaken the checks and balances that define our democracy, in his initial cabinet announcements.
With the threat of consolidated executive power, it will be up to state legislators and governors to help protect our rights, our communities and our democracy — and thanks to members like you who have helped build our 23 state organizations, that is a place where Common Cause has some real power.
Thwarting Project 2025 is our TOP priority — it's a dangerous agenda that threatens the foundations of our democracy and our fundamental freedoms. It's also a far-right wish list: aggressively limiting abortion nationwide, increasing taxes for middle-class families, and rolling back what remains of the Voting Rights Act.
It would reach every part of our lives. And no group is better equipped to stop it than Common Cause — with members in every congressional district and state offices to fight where it matters most.
We must move quickly to make our voices heard throughout the country — and when state legislatures come into session, we'll be ready to move bold reforms, and to resist ANY attempts to suppress voters and silence our voices. Plus, we must put the U.S. Senate on notice that we'll be holding them accountable for how they vote on Trump's Cabinet appointments.
We will also need to work with those in Congress who have power to push them to use all the tools at their disposal to hold the president accountable — we can expose wrongdoing, help advise on investigations, testify at hearings, and mobilize members behind a public pressure campaign.
To help us succeed, I am asking every member to make a special, additional contribution. I expect the second Trump term to be among the most dangerous in our nation's history.
As you might imagine, we put so many resources behind our 2024 efforts that we must now raise additional funds to meet this moment. We need to raise $500,000 to achieve everything we set out to do in 2025 – and more now with the threat that President-elect Trump's second term will pose.
