Pamela: making people suffer behind bars is senseless and cruel.
Every day, we're proving that when we treat incarcerated people with dignity, we can make prisons and our communities safer—and your matched gift can help Vera accelerate this work.
Here's one example:
U.N.I.T.Y. Village doesn't fit the mold of most prison housing units in the United States. Also known as Block C of the East United at North Dakota State Penitentiary, its teal, yellow, and light blue doors line the hallways and many of the walls have been painted by the people who live there. In the center, couches are arranged to create a lounge where residents meet for daily check-ins and check-outs with staff.
Sixty-three people live here, in one of several young adult housing units developed with Vera's Restoring Promise initiative.
The initiative partners with corrections departments to create safer prison environments where incarcerated people can receive support while they learn, grow, and heal, which can help them succeed when they return to their communities.
Research has proven that this approach significantly reduces violence and the use of solitary confinement. It shows that prisons and jails are violent, but don't have to be.
This is exactly the kind of solution we need to scale across the country in 2025. Right now, when you make a year-end gift, your contribution will be automatically MATCHED, dollar-for-dollar, to advance our fight for justice and dignity.
With just THREE days left this year to meet our goal of $100,000, make your tax-deductible year-end gift and see your impact go twice as far with our match →
