SIGN NOW: Congress needs to treat Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy's "DOGE" commission like the joke it is >>
Pamela, Donald Trump just tasked two billionaires, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, with slashing crucial government programs – possibly without any oversight or accountability.
Musk and Ramaswamy will oversee Trump's so-called "Department of Government Efficiency" – which they hope to use to cut trillions of dollars away from our schools, our healthcare, and our communities. [1] Now, Trump aides are pushing dubious legal theories that'd let them bypass Congress to get it done. [2]
The Constitution is clear: Congress sets the budget – not the president, and certainly not Musk and Ramaswamy's fake "DOGE" commission. It's time for Congress to assert its constitutional authority, side with We The People over these two billionaires, and reject this absurd power grab.
Sign the Petition: Congress calls the shots on how we spend public money – don't let Trump hand the keys over to two fringe billionaires >>
Pamela, over and over again, Donald Trump has promised to "drain the swamp" in Washington. But elevating two billionaires to major positions – particularly Elon Musk, who has benefitted majorly from government largesse over his career – paints a different picture.
Let's face it, a man whose bottom lines rely heavily on government spending is the last person who should be making decisions about it.
Musk's companies alone got $3 billion in federal contracts just last year – but because he and Ramaswamy would not be actual government officials in their "DOGE" commission, they won't have to disclose their financial information or let go of any lucrative government contracts. [1]
Our Constitution clearly grants our elected representatives in Congress the power of the purse, a crucial piece of our checks and balances.
So let's be clear – while the "Department of Government Efficiency" could well go up in smoke in the next few weeks, if it doesn't, it could quickly pose a grave threat to our system of checks and balances.
That's why Common Cause is watchdogging their every step – ready to respond to ANY attempt to cut the legislative branch out of spending decisions and let billionaires line their pockets at all of our expense.
Pamela, can we count on you to join us in urging Congress to do its job, assert its constitutional authority over the budget, and stop this dangerous attack on the federal healthcare, environment, and education programs that millions depend on?
Thanks for all you do,
