Pamela, this has been a difficult time for a lot of us throughout our Common Cause community. I'm sure many of you are hurting and not sure what's next.
And after talking with the team, here's where we've landed. We can't just use the same playbook we used in 2016. We can't be knee-jerk, or immediately go into hashtag resist mode.
We need to have real conversations with people in our lives and hear where they're coming from, and build the kind of community, relationships, and political culture that our democracy is sorely lacking right now.
But here's something I know for sure: Common Cause was built exactly for a moment like this.
The sad fact is, the policies and rhetoric President-elect Trump campaigned on would pose unprecedented risks to our nation's foundational values. Our right to vote. The right to dissent. Freedom of the press. Ethical, transparent government. Even the fundamental rule of law.
So, since last Tuesday, our national and state teams have been laying the groundwork for Common Cause to be the bold pro-democracy, pro-people advocate our country needs right now.
We're taking stock of the anti-democracy policies in Project 2025 and Agenda 47 — like criminalizing voters, replacing civil servants with partisan loyalists, and stripping away our rights — and preparing our response, including litigation where necessary.
And in the states, we're looking at the new balance of power and identifying where we'll be needed most — fighting new voter suppression laws wherever they're introduced and showing a better way forward to expand voters' rights wherever possible.
If you're reading this, I need you to know that you are a critical part of this work. Common Cause's power is the power of the people — not billionaires or corporate special interests — but ordinary people coming together to do what's right.
That's what had to do throughout the first Trump administration too. We organized, raised consciousness, litigated, lobbied, and took to the streets in defense of our democracy eight years ago.
It won't look exactly the same this time, because the environment, the threats, and the country are in a different place than they were 8 years ago.
But here's something that won't change: we must fight for the democracy we deserve. And that means fighting for a country where everyone — no matter your race, your religion, your gender or gender identity, is safe, respected and welcome.
I'm writing to you today to ask if you'll stick with us as we take on the challenges our democracy will face in the coming years. If you're ready to do what this moment demands, can you rush a contribution of $3 or more to our Emergency Mobilization today? >>

We're going to keep building the beloved community, where we're all free from poverty, free from hunger, and free from hate.
I look forward to hearing from members like you about where you'd like to see us go next, because wherever we go, we're going to need to do it together.
Thanks for all you do,
