Tell Congress: We urge you to pass legislation to cancel all existing medical debt. | We live in a country where anyone can go into medical debt — and over a quarter of Americans are currently carrying medical debt. So many Americans face denials of coverage, loss of insurance, and the exploitation of seniors by Medicare Advantage plans. Many are uninsured, and for those with insurance, the soaring costs of healthcare remain way too expensive. That's why Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Ro Khanna introduced a bill to cancel all medical debt — roughly $220 billion that Americans carry because of the broken, for-profit health care system in our country. And a whopping 92% of Americans support canceling medical debt! Sign the petition: Tell Congress to pass legislation to wipe out $220 billion of crushing medical debt! Upon introducing the bill, Senator Sanders said, "No one in America should face financial ruin because of the outrageous cost of an unexpected medical emergency or a hospital stay. The time has come to cancel all medical debt and guarantee health care to all as a human right, not a privilege." Almost 75% of people in America are worried about affording an unexpected medical cost. Nearly 25% of people have skipped medical care because of the cost — including people with insurance. Medical debt is pervasive. It can stop people from seeking future care and it can make it even harder for people to pay for their essentials — like the medications they need. Unburdening millions with medical debt is an important step to correct past economic injustices in our healthcare system.
