ICE is building off its operations in cities like Chicago and Portland, continuing its violent occupation in Minneapolis, and expanding to other cities. Will you sign the petition to demand city and state officials refuse to cooperate with ICE?
Dear MoveOn member,
Minneapolis residents are still grieving after ICE recently murdered two of their neighbors—Renee Good and Alex Pretti.1 The horror of witnessing what people are describing as an "execution" has terrified residents—but also strengthened their resolve to get ICE out of Minneapolis.2
Trump then expanded ICE's inhumane and chaotic raids to places like Maine, where ICE arrested 100 people in a whirlwind three days before withdrawing agents.3 A terrified father spoke with reporters about ICE showing up to his home and threatening to come back for his "entire family"—a threat that left him scared for his young son and wife.4
And now, just this week, former Trump aide and MAGA extremist Steve Bannon is warning that ICE could be deployed to voting polls across the country, threatening the safety and freedom of our elections. "We're going to have ICE surround the polls come November."5
This cannot be normalized.
Everyday people are putting their lives on the line to protect their neighbors and fight back against ICE's unlawful actions. But they shouldn't have to act alone: We need the support of state and local officials.
Trump is still ramping up ICE's attacks on communities across the country. Sign the petition to urge city and state officials to ready themselves now to protect their residents.
Everyone deserves the right to work, learn, and live a full life. ICE is terrorizing entire communities, abducting families and children, physically harming legal observers and protesters, and murdering people in broad daylight. The scale of their occupation and the depravity of their actions are horrifying.
The 10th Amendment makes it clear that the federal government cannot coerce states or cities into doing federal work.6 We need elected leaders everywhere to learn from Minneapolis, as well as Chicago, Portland, and Washington, D.C., and take steps now to protect Americans from ICE's unlawful abuses of power.
The interventions that cities and states must take to disrupt Trump's militarized occupation are going to be tailored to the specific needs of each community, but leaders can lay the groundwork now. In Chicago and Minneapolis, mayors have banned ICE from operating on city-owned property and refused to allow ICE to use city-owned parking lots, ramps, garages, or vacant lots for their raids.7 In Coraopolis, near Pittsburgh, the city council recently voted to terminate police partnership with ICE.8 And in New Mexico, lawmakers are considering a bill, the Immigrant Safety Act, that would prohibit counties from contracting with ICE to house detainees in the state.9
State and local officials—in Minneapolis and across the country—can take steps NOW to do their part in not cooperating with ICE and keeping their residents safe. Will you add your name to the petition?
There are many ways mayors and governors can refuse to cooperate with ICE in order to protect the rights and lives of the people they were elected to serve. But it's up to us to demonstrate the broad public opposition to ICE and demand leaders have the political courage to act.
The force of Trump's untrained and armed ICE deployment is unpredictable, violent, and swift. And it's constantly expanding to more cities around the country. Our communities can't afford for state and local leaders to wait to take action. They can, and must, take steps right now to protect their constituents from the brutality and harm of this administration. Our safety and wellbeing depends on it.
Will you sign the petition to demand local and state officials refuse to cooperate with ICE? We'll follow up in the coming weeks with more ways to take action and push local leaders to do everything in their power to protect residents.
Thanks for all you do.
