Dear Pamela,
Last night, I texted with friends who were fleeing their homes in Los Angeles as multiple fires raged through Los Angeles county destroying homes, businesses, and cultural landmarks. 80,000 residents were forced to evacuate in smoke choking air and chaos. One friend, with a 2 month old baby, fled her house in Pasadena while winds raged around her and the sky burned orange.
Last time these climate-fueled fires raged in California, I felt hopeless and depressed. This time, I feel angry and emboldened. These fires are not an accident, they are caused by greedy oil and gas companies who have polluted our air for decades knowing that their pollution would cause fires, floods, and devastating outcomes for regular people.
This is a crime and they should be held accountable. Call on California to pass a Polluter Pay Climate Superfund to make the biggest polluting companies pay for climate damages so Californians don't have to.
Apu Gomes, Getty ImagesIn the wake of climate disasters like fires, people who have lost their homes and livelihoods are left footing the bill. Taxpayers across California are left on the hook to pay to rebuild roads, bridges, and infrastructure that has been damaged. When fossil fuel companies are responsible for these climate fueled events, why should we be left paying the costs? Sign the petition to Make Polluters Pay!
2 weeks ago, New York was the second state to sign into law a Polluter Pay Climate Superfund bill that will charge the biggest fossil fuel companies $75 billion dollars for climate damages in New York State. California should be next.
It's time to make the companies who are responsible for these terrible fires pay their fair share. Sign the petition now.
Thank you for taking action and stay safe!
