Dear Pamela,
ICYMI, New York just made history as the largest state to date to pass a Climate Superfund Act that will make Big Oil help pay the cost of climate damages. Share your zipcode so we can follow up with you about climate superfunds in your state!
The idea of a climate superfund is simple: if you make a mess, you should have to help pay to clean it up.
Based on traditional superfund laws, 'climate superfunds' would force the largest fossil fuel companies to pay into a fund based on their fair share of emissions over an established period (often the last 30 years). The revenue would then be used for climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. It's a powerful way to finally hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for the damage they've done.
In May 2024, Vermont became the first state in the nation to pass climate superfund legislation. And now, New York just signed the second state climate superfund legislation.
Is your state next?
In 2025, we will continue to ramp up our important state based work and ensure that no matter who is President we can keep holding polluters accountable.
Onwards,
Jamie,
