Add your name to U.S. Senate Candidate Malcolm Kenyatta's petition if you agree: President Biden must cancel at least $50,000 in student debt immediately! | Hi Pamela, I'm Malcolm Kenyatta: proud son of North Philly, Pennsylvania's first gay State Representative of color, and Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate living with thousands of dollars in student loan debt. I want to be real and vulnerable with you about how I got that debt — will you read my student debt story below? And after, I hope you will join me in the fight to eliminate this burden for millions of borrowers who deserve their shot at the American Dream. Sign my petition and join me in calling on President Biden to cancel at least $50,000 in student debt. I did what most people tell young Black kids who grow up in the projects to do: Go to college if you want to make a better life for yourself. But when I got to Temple University in 2007 (a public school that cost around $19,000 a year for Pennsylvania residents at the time) for my first semester of college, I took one look at my list of required books and immediately knew there was a problem. I couldn't afford them. I had already taken out thousands of dollars in student loans just to enroll — even though I had academic scholarships — and there was nothing left to cover the cost of the books. I was broke. Luckily, I had friends and professors who were willing to help. They let me make copies of their books in the tech center or study with them. But I'll never forget how disheartened I felt looking at that reading list. I had graduated high school, been accepted to college, and signed my name to thousands of dollars in debt to get to that moment. I had done everything America says I ought to do to get ahead — but there I was, standing in front of another impossible hurdle. And the hurdles didn't end there. I worked three jobs to get by in college, but still, the debt I took on to pay for my shot at the American dream had a cost. My student debt affects my credit score, my ability to buy a home, and the financial decisions my partner and I make on a daily basis. But I'm not alone — I'm one of 44.7 million Americans who feel the crushing weight of student debt every day. It doesn't have to be that way, though. Right now, President Joe Biden has the ability to cancel student debt and provide real relief for folks who are being crushed by that burden. Canceling student debt will jumpstart our economy and be a huge start to closing the wealth gap in this country, and President Biden can do that with a stroke of his pen. So, I'm calling on him to do it — and I'm asking you to join me, Pamela. Will you add your name to our petition and urge President Biden to cancel at least $50,000 in student debt for millions of Americans? Thanks for reading my story and joining me in this fight.
