| Tell President Biden: "Over 45 million people in the country are still paying off student loans, many of which are also unemployed due to the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The student debt crisis is both a racial justice and economic justice issue as there are clear racial disparities in who needs to take out loans and for how much. We are counting on you, President Biden, to use your executive power to cancel ALL student debt for federal borrowers within your first 100 days in office." | Pamela, Student loan debt is an anchor around our entire economy―and Joe Biden has the power to end it. We view an educated populace as a public good from kindergarten through the end of high school. Now, in a world where college is more important than ever, we've spent decades divesting from universities and passing more and more costs on to individual students. Who pays the highest price? People from historically marginalized communities who have to take out more loans in the first place. The fact of the matter is, the Trump kids don't have student debt in the first place. Limiting cancellation to an arbitrary number―whether it's $10,000 or $50,000 doesn't take into account the difference in where people start. That's why the fairest thing to do is to cancel it all, and then reform higher education so that no one falls into the student loan trap again! SIGN NOW: Tell Joe Biden: Cancel ALL student loan debt! The student debt crisis is an issue of both race and class inequities as working class Black, brown, and Indigenous people are targets of predatory practices, borrowing at high rates to cover rising tuition fees. As Rep. Ayanna Pressley stated on day one of the Biden administration: "Black women carry more student debt than any other group in America." Joe Biden has the power to take action for racial and economic justice by signing an executive order within his first 100 days in office to cancel ALL student debt for federal borrowers. SIGN NOW to make sure he does! Thanks, Mike Phelan Progress America |
