Tell Congress: Pass the Postal Banking Act and support not only the USPS, but underserved communities across the country. | Pamela, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy has a plan for the Postal Service: Slower mail and higher prices. It's no surprise that DeJoy's proposals weaken the Postal Service overall―he owns a private shipping corporation that competes directly with the USPS, and he was installed by Trump with a mandate to mess with mail-in voting during the 2020 election. There's another path: Utilize the USPS' existing infrastructure to do MORE. The Postal Banking Act, previously introduced by Senators Bernie Sanders and Kirsten Gillibrand, would do exactly that. SIGN NOW: Tell Congress to immediately reintroduce and pass the Postal Banking Act! Postal Banking isn't new―it existed in America from 1911 to 1967, and 1.5 billion people worldwide receive financial services through their country's postal system. Postal Banking would allow post offices to bring basic financial services like low-cost savings and checking accounts and take aim at predatory practices — payday loans, high-fee prepaid debit cards, overdraft fees — that have taken advantage of unbanked and underbanked Americans. Additionally, the law would allow the Postal Service to offer small-dollar loans that could eliminate the market for payday loans. These services would bring additional revenue into the Postal Service, fight crooked financial practices, and help a whole lot of people. We should do it. Now. SIGN NOW: Tell Congress to immediately reintroduce and pass the Postal Banking Act! Thanks, Mike Phelan Progress America |
