Pamela, Big USPS news yesterday: President Biden nominated new governors to fill the vacancies in the Postal Board of Governors. When confirmed, they will give Democrats a controlling majority on the Board, and they can bring Postmaster General Louis DeJoy's reign of postal terror to an end. Remember: When DeJoy was sworn in as Postmaster General, the mail came on time. Under his DeJoy's leadership, the mail has slowed down considerably―and DeJoy thinks slower mail and higher prices are a recipe for success. When he testified before the House Oversight committee yesterday, DeJoy said that the USPS is in a "death spiral." This is false. The USPS would be entirely self-funding if not for an absurd pre-funding requirement Congress put into place a decade ago. DeJoy is slowing the mail down because he wants to make it easier for private logistics corporations―like the one he owned before being appointed Postmaster General―to compete with the USPS. It's corruption, pure and simple. The Senate must confirm these appointees―but President Biden should still remove the current governors who have been silent and complicit in DeJoy's sabotage. This isn't a done deal. The American Prospect's David Dayan noted on Twitter: | David Dayen @ddayen | | As long as Donald Moak, a Democrat on the board who has publicly supported DeJoy, is still in place, DeJoy will be too, regardless of these appointments. https://t.co/HI6WHndhej | | | We need to keep up the pressure!
DeJoy's plan to slow down the mail and charge more for the privilege isn't just bad for the USPS―it's bad management. There are no shortage of ways to save the post office money or generate new revenue―whether it's electric postal vehicles or postal banking―that would do more to save the USPS AND maintain the reliable service that Americans have depended on since our founding. Sign now: President Biden must fire any members of the USPS Board of Governors who supported Louis DeJoy's corrupt sabotage of an American treasure. Thanks, Mike Phelan Progress America |
