Pamela, 44 million Americans are saddled by over $1.6 trillion dollars in student loan debt. That means too many of us can't buy homes, afford medical treatment, or even pay for groceries. This is a crisis — and like so many of America's problems, it's caused by political corruption. That's why RepresentUs is proud to announce the launch of our new short film starring Ed Helms: Unbreaking America: Drowning in Student Debt. Watch our new short film to see why corruption is the root of the student debt crisis – and then take action to help us fix it. To be clear: Student debt isn't about young people taking out more loans than they'll be able to pay back. It's a corrupt cycle between predatory loan companies, lobbyists, and our lawmakers, designed to make big banks rich and powerful — all at our expense. Even if President Biden makes some progress on student debt, a short-term fix wouldn't solve the root of the problem: Corruption. But here's what will: Right now, a new anti-corruption law called the For the People Act is moving through Congress. It would break the vicious cycle of corruption by fixing campaign finance and ethics laws, modernizing and securing our elections and voting systems, and ending pay-to-play politics that lets big money and special interests co-opt our government for their own gain. It's the most powerful anti-corruption law in a generation. But it won't solve anything if it doesn't pass. That's where you come in. The For the People Act could be brought to a vote any day, and we need to show Congress that their constituents want it passed. Check out our brand new short film Unbreaking America: Drowning in Student Debt – then demand Congress pass the For the People Act. We have the best opportunity in decades to pass vital anti-corruption laws at the federal level. Let's keep the pressure up. Thank you for being a part of this, Jen Johnson |
