In a moment I'm going to ask you to support our efforts to ensure that Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto becomes the next governor of Puerto Rico. But first, let me explain why this election is so important to our progressive movement and what we stand for.

You've heard me say it before: the United States is one of the richest, most innovative and powerful countries in the world, and yet, time and time again, it has failed to apply its talents to ensure the full prosperity and safety of all its people. There may be no better place to show this callousness than its treatment towards the people of Puerto Rico.

For far too long, the people of Puerto Rico have suffered a humanitarian crisis at the hands of an unresponsive government, austerity, and entrenched corporate greed. From the colonialism that deprived the island of its own resources and power, to the neoliberalism that has denied its people a voice, Puerto Rico has been left with inferior economic rights, insufficient health care and wages, increasingly unaffordable education and a dated, crumbling infrastructure.

After the devastation of Hurricanes Irma and María, the ongoing earthquakes, and the coronavirus pandemic, it is utterly clear Puerto Rico needs a leader who can address the critical issues facing the island and the impact of years of ineffective governance.

Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto is exactly that leader, and today I want to ask for your support of her campaign.

Puerto Rico needs a leader who is wholly dedicated to improving and protecting the economic health and human rights of its people and creating a long-term path for shared prosperity.

As Mayor of San Juan, Carmen has stood with the people of Puerto Rico through a series of tragedies. She has shown the conviction and courage to take on Donald Trump for his cruelty towards Puerto Rico.

Unlike others, she has been unafraid to demand more for the island, bold enough to decry injustice and strategic enough to coordinate a response when others fell silent. I've witnessed for myself her commitment to a government for the people as we walked the devastated streets of San Juan together following Hurricane María. She stood with her people during their darkest hours, and will continue doing so if she is elected governor.

I believe Carmen will deliver renewed hope and transformational change for the people of Puerto Rico. As a national Co-Chair and active campaigner she stood with us during our campaign for president, and now it's time for us to stand with her.

This past week has shown that our movement can bring about real change which will help transform politics in the United States. Standing together, against virtually the entire political and economic establishment, we helped elect two new progressive members of Congress and, as we await the final Democratic Senate primary results in Kentucky, stand a chance with Charles Booker to help pull off one of the major political upsets in recent history. Together, we are showing what is possible when we get behind strong progressive candidates and help them win.
