In a pandemic, the World Health Organization means more than ever

America's go-it-alone strategy allowed community spread to take root around the country, forcing us to shut it all down.

Tell Congress:

"Addressing the COVID-19 pandemic is an all-hands-on-deck effort. We can't let politicians gamble with our lives to distract us from shoddy decision-making. For the sake of everyone's health, I urge you to immediately restore U.S. funding to the World Health Organization (WHO)."

On May 29th, Donald Trump announced "that the U.S. will be terminating its relationship with the World Health Organization."

The pandemic is still infecting 20,000 Americans every day—and the WHO has been essential to the global response. We need to make sure that every single American has access to rapid COVID-19 testing and any future potential treatments. Trump's withdrawal jeopardizes that.

Tell Congress: Restore U.S. funding to the World Health Organization.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the Trump Administration rejected the WHO's COVID test for a faulty one developed quickly by Big Pharma. While Germany, South Korea, and other nations worked in collaboration with the WHO to develop a robust response, America's go-it-alone strategy allowed community spread to take root around the country, forcing us to shut it all down.

Today, several hundred thousand people are sick with COVID-19 in the U.S., and more than 100,000 have lost their lives. Even as cities and states around the country "re-open their economies," infection rates remain on the rise. But the federal government has grown bored with the pandemic, leaving us all on our own.

Trump's decision to quit funding WHO reflects a worldview in which government policy prioritizes the needs of Wall Street over patients, and public health only exists to turn a profit. Drug companies use their monopoly patents to squeeze every dime they can from patients, while many patients are unable to afford their medications. Some die.

When Big Pharma makes decisions based on profits not patients, it's harder for researchers to collaborate on potential treatments or vaccines to use against the pandemic. Trump's shortsighted decision to halt U.S. funding for the World Health Organization will hurt joint worldwide efforts to find successful treatments for COVID-19--which would allow us to safely re-open schools and stadiums. Whether the issue is prescription drug costs or funding the WHO, politicians should always put our health and our lives first.

Sign the petition: Urge your lawmakers to immediately restore funding to the World Health Organization. Lives are at stake.

Thanks,

Alex Lawson
