Pamela,
Unless you're a millionaire, you've probably noticed that the cost of a grocery run is at a record high. So why does the Republican budget cut the $6 a day SNAP provides to millions of needy families?
The sad truth: They want to take milk, eggs, fruits, veggies, and bread off families' tables in order to give more tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is considered the country's most effective tool to combat food insecurity. 42.1 million people in America rely on SNAP benefits to feed their families every month. That's 12.6% of U.S. residents!
On top of that, a full 81% of SNAP households include a child, elderly person, or person with disabilities.
In the richest country in the world, we should be able to support more families struggling to afford groceries, not fewer. What kind of values do we have as a country if Congress votes to rip food away from 42 million people?
The House-passed budget is now being considered by the Senate. They need to hear from us loud and clear: No cuts to SNAP food assistance!
Around 47.4 million people in America don't know where their next meal is coming from. And when the economy is doing poorly, more people need SNAP to stay healthy and out of poverty.
Yet the Republican budget targets those who struggle to put food on the table in order to give tax breaks to those who have never wondered where their next meal is coming from.
If the budget passes, around 40 million Americans—including about 1 in every 5 children—will see their food assistance cut or ended entirely. Not only that, the cuts affect Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) benefits and school lunch programs for millions as well.
Cutting food assistance programs would devastate millions of families who just need a little help paying their grocery bills. And once these programs are gone, it will be even harder to bring them back. Congress needs to hear loud and clear that we won't stand for these dangerous cuts in our communities.
Add your name today. Tell Congress not to cut the $6 a day families receive in SNAP benefits to give more tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.
Thank you for standing up for children and families,
- The Bittman Project
