Pamela, troubling reports from CNN confirm a dangerous new part of the horrible deportation machine Trump is building: the Alien Enemies Act (AEA).[1]
In essence, the AEA — the last of the widely decried Alien and Sedition Acts still on the books — allows for state-sanctioned terror and discrimination against immigrants.
It's an outdated and xenophobic war authority that Trump would use in peacetime to detain and deport people without regard for human rights or basic due process. We know because it's this same law used to put Japanese, German, and Italian residents in the U.S. into detention camps during World War I and II.
With senior administration officials discussing their next steps now, THIS is the moment to draw a line in the sand and remind Democrats and Republicans that throwing out constitutionally protected rights doesn't make ANY of us safer.
Now and always, our job is to defend communities facing violence and injustice. One crucial way to do that today is by building support for Sen. Mazie Hirono and Rep. Ilhan Omar's Neighbors Not Enemies Act (H.R.630; S.193), which would repeal the AEA once and for all — and create a huge obstacle for Trump's plans.
| ACT NOW |
The Trump administration has shown, both through its Muslim ban in 2017 and dozens of extreme anti-immigrant executive orders over the past few weeks, that they don't judge us by our actions or character — they only care where we or our grandparents happened to be born.
Trump, Stephen Miller, and others have outlined their vision, Pamela: A weaponized immigration policy that allows them to target non-citizens and their families as if they were enemy combatants.
Now, it's time we respond with ours and continue to build support for a world where people can flee violence, rebuild their lives, and thrive in welcoming communities. That world requires passing legislation like the Neighbors Not Enemies Act.
Deporting millions of our family members, friends, and neighbors will not fix our under-resourced immigration system and will do even less to make our communities safe or help people thrive.
Trump will claim that he's invoking the AEA to target criminal gangs that have "invaded" the United States. BUT the AEA isn't some narrow law enforcement tool – it directly enables the U.S. government to uproot entire communities, separate families, and discard basic civil rights protections. It's a law that should never be used again — and that's why we need to do all we can to wipe it off the books for good.
We share the responsibility to root out the hatred entangled at the heart of U.S. immigration and foreign policy. It'll require a deep commitment — and a sustained effort — but we can do it together.
Right now, Trump's actions are facing a slew of lawsuits, and as those cases make their way through the courts, we have an obligation to remind Congress where their constituents stand. Repealing a law that echoes the darkest chapters of U.S. history shouldn't be a partisan issue. That's why, no matter who your members of Congress are, they need to hear from you today.
Thank you for working for peace,
The Win Without War team
