Pamela, did you see my message?
SIGN NOW: Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch can't be trusted to rule impartially in a case that could make his friends millions. He must recuse himself. >>
Pamela, here's a simple fact: Supreme Court justices are the only federal judges who aren't required to follow a binding ethical code.
You read that right. Our highest court is held to the lowest ethical standards.
And right now, these low standards have made way for a major conflict of interest: Justice Gorsuch has yet to recuse himself from a case that could roll back environmental regulations while making millions of dollars for his good friend, oil baron Philip Anschutz. [1]
Add your name: urge Justice Gorsuch to recuse himself from this case – and prevent a major conflict of interest. >>
Justice Gorsuch and Anschutz have had a close personal and financial relationship for decades – Anschutz has hosted Gorsuch for luxury trips and events, and he even lobbied the Bush administration to nominate Gorsuch for his first appointment as a federal judge. [2]
And now, Anschutz stands to profit from this case, Seven County Infrastructure Coalition v. Eagle County, Colorado. Anschutz is directly involved in this case – his company even submitted a "friend of the court" brief urging the Supreme Court to gut environmental protections and greenlight oil and gas drilling. [1].
Pamela, how can we trust Justice Gorsuch to stay impartial in a case that could lead to major profits for his close friend?
If Justice Gorsuch fails to recuse himself, this would just be the latest in a long list of ethical violations from Justices Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch – from private trips with billionaire donors to undisclosed tuition and real estate deals. [3]
Last year, the Supreme Court and Chief Justice Roberts implemented a weak, non-binding "code of conduct" after a series of high-profile scandals – and while some justices have followed it and recused themselves when necessary, others have failed to do so despite glaring conflicts of interest. [4]
We must demand better from our highest court. If you agree, tell Justice Gorsuch: He must recuse himself. We deserve fair, impartial rulings from our highest court. >>
Pamela, we deserve a democracy where all public officials abide by high ethical standards when conducting the people's business – no exceptions.
Thanks for all you do,
