Earlier this week, Politico published a long article with this ominous headline: "Who will run the 2024 election? They're on your ballot in 2022."1
The article looks at the races in 27 states this fall to elect the top official who will oversee the counting of ballots and certification of results for the 2024 presidential election—and how Donald Trump and the MAGA world are working to elect loyal followers who will throw out votes and call the election in his favor, no matter the true outcome.2
That means our democracy is on the line this November, and it is why MoveOn made the unprecedented decision to invest millions of dollars in a campaign to defeat Trump's candidates for these positions and elect people who will protect our rights and count every vote.
We've told you about this plan before, and today we want to give you an exciting update about our efforts.
Together, MoveOn members have raised nearly $1.5 million to help defeat Mark Finchem, the Trump-endorsed candidate for secretary of state in Arizona.3 Finchem is an avowed white supremacist, supporter of the Big Lie, and attended the January 6 insurrection.4
This is a huge step toward success, but we cannot stop now. With Trump's help, Finchem has raised almost $1 million, and he is only one candidate in one state who must be defeated.5
MoveOn is the only major progressive organization taking on this work right now, and we cannot afford to slow down. Andra, will you join with other MoveOn members and chip in $5 a month to keep up this work?

Stopping Trump's effort to install lackeys in these roles in battleground states like Arizona and Georgia—the two states that decided the 2020 election—is absolutely critical to protecting our democracy.
Arizona had the smallest margin of victory for Joe Biden in 2020, followed closely by Georgia, where Trump famously asked Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to "find" 11,780 votes in order to flip the election in his favor.6
Trump has endorsed GOP Congressman Jody Hice in Georgia, where Hice, like Finchem, believes the Big Lie and still supports overturning the election.7
Imagine how different the 2020 election would have looked if Finchem and Hice had been in charge of counting the votes. That could be the nightmare scenario we'll face in 2024 if we don't defeat these authoritarian candidates this year.
And it is why MoveOn made the decision, for the first time in its 23-year history, to invest millions in an effort to defeat Trump's chosen candidates for secretary of state.
