Dear MoveOn member,
My name is Robert Fox, and this is the last email I'll ever send you.
For eight years, I've had the pleasure of working at MoveOn as the chief financial officer, managing our budget and making decisions about what campaigns we are able to fund.
Together, we've raised hundreds of millions of dollars to elect progressives up and down the ballot, powered a blue wave in Congress in 2018, defeated Trump in 2020, and so much more.
As I reflect on my time at MoveOn, I need to be honest with you about a few things.
First, this job is hard. Unlike most political groups, we're proud we don't take a dime of corporate cash. I never spent my time wining and dining the billionaire fat cats. Instead, MoveOn is powered by small-dollar grassroots donations from members like you.
In the political world, where Big Money reigns supreme, funding our work through grassroots donations is a rare, powerful, and courageous act.
But it has its challenges. The truth is that it's far easier to get one or two huge checks from billionaire funders every year—but we refuse to be beholden to a handful of ultra-wealthy donors.
Instead, we work hard every single day to explain to our members the work we're doing, why it's important, and to ask you to contribute whatever you can to help power our efforts.
Second, our fundraising has taken a dip this year. The pandemic has taken a toll on families across the country. People have lost loved ones, been let go from their jobs, and seen their hours cut. Thousands of small businesses were forced to close.
And many supporters have felt less urgency around political giving now that a Democrat is in the Oval Office.
Luckily, we've stewarded our resources responsibly, and we've been able to weather this year's downturn in fundraising. I felt this was the right time to pass the torch: We're in a strong financial position, and we've selected an extraordinary individual as our next CFO (I can't wait till you learn who they are!).
In order to fully fund our work in 2022 and run the hard-hitting, innovative grassroots campaigns MoveOn is famous for, we are going to need your help.
If you are in a financial position to do so, will you start a $8 monthly donation today to power our efforts to defeat the GOP in 2022?
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
The people who work at MoveOn are some of the finest professionals in the political world.
I've seen our organizers work late nights and early mornings to plan massive nationwide protests demanding Trump stop separating families of color at the border and demanding racial justice.
And I've watched with awe as our political team pulled off the impossible—like helping flip Arizona and Georgia blue in 2020.
But the individuals I want to thank most are people like you: our members. MoveOn exists because—every single day—members like you start and sign petitions, attend protests, call Congress, organize your own communities, and donate money to power our campaigns.
That's what makes MoveOn not only a progressive powerhouse but a force for good in the world.
It's been the honor of a lifetime to serve as MoveOn's CFO. And I look forward to working alongside you as a MoveOn member.
This is the last time I'll ever ask: Will you invest $8 a month in MoveOn to keep us strong in 2022 and power our work to defeat the GOP?
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you've done—and all you will do.
–Robert FoxWant to support MoveOn's work? The GOP is launching an all-out campaign to take down the Democratic majority in Congress and reinstall Mitch McConnell as Senate majority leader in 2022. To defeat the GOP, MoveOn is going all-in with TV ads, a nationwide grassroots organizing campaign, and more.
Will you chip in to power our effort to defeat McConnell and the GOP in 2022?
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
