Dear MoveOn member,
Imagine, for just a minute, if there were no MoveOn.
If Donald Trump were to use every dirty trick to try to install himself in the White House for a second term—no MoveOn to inspire and organize voters in every congressional district in the country to turn out and defeat him.
If Democrats run from their own shadows on student loans, health care, or climate change—no MoveOn to hold their feet to the fire.
When major corporations funnel campaign contributions to insurrectionists and supporters of the Big Lie—no MoveOn to sound the alarm and hold them accountable.
Scary, right?
MoveOn is an independent voice—a way for millions of us to speak truth to power, regardless of who "power" is. To preserve that independence, we don't take big checks from CEOs or corporations. We're funded by small contributions from our members.
Unlike most political groups, we wear our commitment to not taking a dime of corporate cash as a badge. I never spend my time wining and dining billionaire fat cats. Instead, MoveOn is powered by and large by small-dollar grassroots donations from members like you.
In the political world, where Big Money reigns supreme, funding our work through grassroots donations is a rare, powerful, and courageous act.
But it has its challenges. The truth is that it's far easier to get one or two huge checks from billionaire funders every year—but we refuse to be beholden to a handful of ultra-wealthy donors.
Instead, we work hard every single day to explain to our members the work we're doing, why it's important, and to ask you to contribute whatever you can to help power our efforts.
But our fundraising has taken a dip this year. The pandemic has taken a toll on families across the country. People have lost loved ones, been let go from their jobs, and seen their hours cut. Thousands of small businesses were forced to close.
And many supporters have felt less urgency around political giving now that a Democrat is in the Oval Office.
Luckily, we've stewarded our resources responsibly, and we've been able to weather this year's downturn in fundraising.
The people who work at MoveOn are some of the finest professionals in the political world.
I've seen our organizers work late nights and early mornings to plan massive nationwide protests demanding Trump stop separating families of color at the border.
And I've watched with awe as our political team pulled off the impossible—like helping flipping Arizona and Georgia blue in 2020.
But the individuals I want to thank most as the year comes to a close are people like you: our members. MoveOn exists because—every single day—members like you start and sign petitions, call Congress, attend protests, organize their communities, and donate money to power our campaigns.
That's what makes MoveOn not only a progressive powerhouse but a force for good in the world.
It's the honor of a lifetime to serve as MoveOn's executive director. And I can't wait to see what we accomplish together in 2020.
Will you invest $65 in MoveOn to help keep us strong in 2022 and power our work to defeat the GOP?
Thanks for all you've done—and all you will do.
