Tell Your Senators: We urge you to pass the $15 minimum wage! Raising the federal minimum wage from its current rate of $7.25 an hour to $15 would lift pay for 32 million workers—a fifth of the US workforce, the majority of which lives below the poverty line. | Can you add your name right now and tell the Senate to pass a $15 minimum wage? There's one important thing missing from the otherwise excellent $1.9 trillion Covid relief package Biden just signed: a $15 federal minimum wage, which a majority of Americans support. Raising the federal minimum wage from its current rate of $7.25 an hour to $15 would lift pay for 32 million workers—a fifth of the US workforce, the majority of which lives below the poverty line. Under the proposed plan, a higher wage would be gradually phased in over five years, giving small businesses the chance to adapt to changes over time. Biden says he supports the wage hike. It's now a matter of getting Senators to not cave on giving millions of frontline workers a living wage. Sign the petition: Senators must pass the $15 minimum wage! When the Senate Parliamentarian deemed the wage hike a violation of budget legislation requirements, Senate Democrats nixed the measure from the relief package entirely. In response, Sen. Bernie Sanders tried to add the wage measure back to the package with an amendment, which eight Democratic senators voted against. Of those eight were Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, both of whom have a record of upholding the antiquated Senate filibuster and vetoing critical legislation their constituents have demanded—such as $2,000 monthly survival checks through the end of the pandemic. Sinema has long allied herself with corporate lobbyists, fintech execs, and predatory lenders. Her thumbs-down vote stands in the way of better pay for more than 839,000 workers in her own state. Frontline workers, the majority of whom are women and people of color, have been praised as "heroes" throughout the pandemic. But workers don't need empty gestures—they need the money they were promised. It's past time they're paid a living wage. Sign the petition: Senators must pass the $15 minimum wage! Thanks.
