Pamela, During a televised town hall, President Joe Biden was asked if he would cancel $50,000 in student debt, as proposed by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chuck Schumer. His response? "I'm prepared to write off $10,000 debt, but not 50 because I don't think I have the authority to do it by signing [an executive order]." But here's the thing: With use of executive action, Joe Biden can forgive $50,000 in debt without action from Congress. Elizabeth Warren tweeted: Will you join with Senator Warren and sign the petition calling on President Biden to cancel at least $50,000 in student loan debt? Click here to sign the petition. By cancelling student debt, we can help close the racial wealth gap. We can stimulate the economy in a time when so many Americans are struggling to make ends meet. And, we can provide new opportunities to millions of Americans who are currently burdened with debt. Both President Obama and Donald Trump used their executive authority to cancel student loan debt. President Biden should now use this same power to forgive at least $50,000 in debt. Will you join Senators Warren and Schumer in and build the pressure on President Biden to use his executive authority? Sign the petition: President Biden should use his executive authority to cancel $50,000 in student loan debt now! Thanks, Team Progress |
