The question asked was whether we supported eliminating private health insurance. Some said yes; I said no. But the real question is whether we as Democrats will protect and build on Obamacare -- or get rid of it and start over with something new. I believe we can get to universal coverage and lower costs by building on Obamacare with a public option. If you agree, let me know. But I’m surprised that so many Democrats are running on getting rid of it. I understand the appeal of Medicare for All -- but the folks supporting it should be clear that it means getting rid of Obamacare. I am not for that. I’m for building on Obamacare to ensure health care is a right for all, not a privilege. If your insurance company is not doing right by you -- or you’re not covered at all -- you should have a public option like Medicare. But I’m against getting rid of Obamacare. I was proud every day to serve as Barack Obama’s vice president -- but never more than on the day we signed the Affordable Care Act. It covered 20 million additional Americans. It prohibits insurance companies from increasing premiums or denying coverage for the over 100 million with pre-existing conditions, like cancer, diabetes, and asthma. I know how hard it was to get passed. Starting over just makes no sense to me. The Affordable Care Act was a historic achievement for President Obama. And if I’m elected president, I’m going to do everything in my power to protect and expand it. If you’re with me, let me know.
