Will you sign the petition to signal to the Trump administration that we will not tolerate these tariffs?! Dear MoveOn member, Trump's tariffs are out of control. If you didn't know, tariffs are basically extra costs that make things imported from other countries more expensive. And guess who foots the bill? You, me, and everyone trying to survive on a budget. Trump told people he would lower costs, but his chaotic policies are already increasing inflation and raising costs for American consumers, while tanking the stock market. Now Trump White House aides are preparing a new slate of tariffs for him to release on April 2, in a move that Trump is calling "Liberation Day."1 Trump's proposed tariffs will drive up the costs of goods that we all rely on. Billionaires will be fine, but these tariffs will hurt the middle class and working families the most. Will you sign the petition to stop Trump's tariff tyranny? These tariffs aren't tiny tweaks to adjust for inflation, or adjustments made to increase wages for workers. The burden will fall on all of us to pay for Trump's reckless decisions. These tariffs will drive up costs on clothing, groceries, and nearly everything we buy. Trump and his administration claim that these tariffs will bring back manufacturing jobs and make U.S. products cheaper to buy. But spoiler alert: It's not that simple. It would take a significant amount of time—substantially longer than Trump's four-year term as president—to deliver on his promises. Trump's tariffs are going to make everyone's lives harder—just so he can score political points with his base. This is a complete betrayal of working-and middle-class families everywhere in the United States. It's not just Trump's administration either—Republican lawmakers are complicit in driving up your costs too. They slipped a measure into the latest government spending bill to prevent a vote in Congress that might have ended the deeply unpopular tariffs.2 Even Republicans know how deeply unpopular these tariffs are—just another thing to show the pure chaos we've come to expect from the Trump administration. Trump slapped tariffs on more than $360 BILLION worth of Chinese goods in his first term, and the Chinese government retaliated with tariffs of their own, which raised the cost of materials like steel and aluminum and made it harder for companies to manufacture products in the U.S. at affordable prices.3 Tariffs to this extent could cause soybeans, pork, and other products that farmers export to suddenly become too expensive for companies in China to buy, which would harm local farmers and local economies.4 The buck stops here. Sign the petition if you agree. Trump's aggressive tariffs won't help American manufacturing. If we want to change people's lives for the better, we need to focus on policies that actually invest in American workers and put money back into the pockets of American people.
