Dear Pamela,
Today, Representative Norma Torres (CA) and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) introduced the Fairness to Freedom Act in Congress. This legislation seeks to establish a universal right to federally funded legal representation for anyone facing deportation who can't afford a lawyer on their own.
Everyone—regardless of their background—should have the opportunity to understand their rights, defend themselves, and have their fair day in court. Fairness in legal matters—or due process—is a foundational value and an integral part of the United States Constitution. |
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids aren't new, but the Trump administration has escalated its tactics with cruelty—targeting schools, houses of worship, and other previously protected spaces. These raids harm everyone in our communities and don't make us safer.
Anyone can be at risk of deportation. Families are being targeted, detained, and denied access to legal help, even when they have lawful claims to stay in the United States.
Pamela, there is no fairness or due process when any person can be torn from their home, workplace, and community without a hearing or the chance to understand and defend their rights. Now is the time for Congress to ensure everyone has access to a lawyer. We need you to show your support and defend immigrant families from separation. Urge your representative to support the Fairness to Freedom Act and help keep families together.

Together, we can keep families together, disrupt the criminalization of immigrants, and safeguard the rights and dignity of all.
In solidarity, Vera Institute of Justice |
