Demand the Office of Government Ethics launch an immediate investigation into any potential insider trading connected to Trump's tariffs! Dear MoveOn member, President Donald Trump created mass chaos when he announced sweeping tariffs globally, causing markets to tank dramatically. Then, on Wednesday, he abruptly reversed course, causing markets to bounce back. Suspiciously, only hours before his announcement, he posted on Truth Social, "This is a great time to buy!!!"1 Trump's shady actions have caused some members of Congress to speculate if this was his plan all along—intentionally playing with the global economy in order to enrich himself and his buddies—and raise potential serious legal and ethical concerns.2 It should go without saying that the people we elect should be acting in the best interest of the American people—not playing reckless and careless games with the stock market in order to line their own pockets. Trump's tariff increases were the steepest since the 1930s—and they predictably caused the stock market to tank. The reversal also predictably caused a rebound, the highest single-day gain since 2008.3 So the question is: Was this Trump's plan all along? The STOCK Act of 2012 requires members of Congress to disclose financial transactions and makes insider trading illegal.4,5 But members of Congress should be held to stricter rules to ensure that decisions are made in the best interest of the people, not their own personal financial gain. Trump's tariffs created turmoil globally, and put the economy and the livelihoods of everyday families in limbo. We deserve transparency from every single one of our elected leaders to ensure no illegal activity, ethics violations, or conflicts of interest transpired. Will you sign the petition? Democrats are already coalescing around an investigation. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries affirmed that House Democrats will be looking into possible misconduct. "We need to get to the bottom of the possible stock manipulation that is unfolding before the American people, including what, if any, advance knowledge did members of the House Republican Conference have of Trump's decision to pause the reckless tariffs that he put into place?"6 And shortly after Wednesday's announcement, Senators Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego sent a letter to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics and the White House chief of staff urging for an inquiry into potential insider trading or other illegal financial actions related to Trump's tariffs reversal.7 But this shouldn't be a partisan issue: Every elected official should be committed to providing the American people the transparency we deserve.
