Pamela,
First of all, thank you for everything you do to fight for fair representation in our democracy. And thank you for following along with our updates on a critical redistricting case in front of the Supreme Court right now: Louisiana v. Callais.
In case you need a reminder of what's at stake: anti-democracy extremists are attempting to undo Louisiana's new, fair congressional map. If the map is overturned, it would once again diminish the rightful voting power of Black Louisianans. And the outcome of this case could undermine the Voting Rights Act (VRA), which would have broad implications for maps across the country.
I attended the oral argument at the Supreme Court, and I know that the fair maps movement has made a rock-solid case for upholding Louisiana's two Black opportunity districts.
As Justice Elena Kagan noted during the argument, three different courts — comprised of seven federal judges — have all agreed that Louisiana should have two Black opportunity districts in accordance with the VRA. Pamela, it's clear: Louisiana's VRA-compliant map — which Louisianans have fought so hard for — must stand. The Supreme Court must follow its own recent precedent on this issue, as it upheld the VRA less than two years ago. And extremists cannot be allowed to gerrymander at the expense of the people.
Over the next few months, while we wait for the Supreme Court's ruling, the All On the Line campaign will continue mobilizing grassroots supporters to protect fair maps, voting rights, and fair representation across the country.
We must do everything we can to defend our democracy as extremists try to undo our progress through court cases like these.
People like you are at the heart of our movement for a truly representative democracy. We'll keep you posted on the outcome of this case and what comes next.
Thank you,
Marina
