Pamela,
We made Florida history this week!
For the first time ever, the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act was heard in committee in the Florida Legislature.
What happened this week took hard work—it happened because Representative LaVon Bracy Davis and the Florida Voting Rights Act coalition mobilized in under 36 hours, refusing to let anti-voter politicians dominate the conversation.
Common Cause Florida was on the ground, working directly with legislators and our coalition partners to do something bold. When the House Government Operations Subcommittee met to consider a dangerous elections bill—a Florida version of the federal SAVE Act—we saw our opportunity.
We flipped the script.
The Florida VRA coalition worked with lawmakers to introduce a strike-all amendment that would have replaced the bad bill with the full Florida Voting Rights Act. Because of that amendment, lawmakers were forced to do something they never expected: go on the record—for voting rights or against them.
Our amendment would have rolled back harmful restrictions that make it harder to vote, ensured every Floridian has fair and equal access to the ballot, and put in place safeguards to prevent future attacks on voting rights.
And Pamela, while the outcome may not surprise you—every Republican voted against it, every Democrat voted for it—what we accomplished was unprecedented.
Yes, the amendment was defeated, but for the first time in Florida's history, we forced lawmakers to take a public stance. That is progress. That is power. And that is exactly the kind of political and legislative maneuvering it will take to carry this fight to the finish line.
We challenged their anti-voter agenda head-on. And because of your support, Common Cause Florida was there—in the room, at the mic, and in the fight. We testified in committee to make the case for real, lasting solutions to protect Floridians—instead of wasting time on made-up problems designed to divide us.
This vote was a turning point, but it's not the end. We can't keep up this pressure and create real change without you.
Pamela, our team is still in the halls of the Capitol, strategizing for what's next—and we need your support to keep going. If you're able, chip in now to fuel the fight for voting rights in Florida and help us keep making history.
In solidarity,
Amy Keith, Executive Director
and the team at Common Cause Florida
