Pamela,
Thank you for being in our corner with your continued support of Vera.
The work we do at Vera is essential to building true safety and justice in communities nationwide. It is above partisan politics. When the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) abruptly terminated all our federal funding last Friday, it endangered programs that expand counseling and treatment for people experiencing mental health crises, support corrections staff across the country to improve prison operations and safety, and help law enforcement better serve deaf survivors of domestic violence.
That's why, in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, Vera called upon the DOJ to reverse course, restore federal grants for our critical public safety programs, and preserve DOJ funding to other organizations like ours.
You can read our statement and letter here. >>
Of the dozens of peer organizations that receive federal funding from the DOJ, Vera is the only one known to have had its grants terminated so abruptly.
This leads us to believe that we are being targeted for our public opposition to President Trump's mass deportation agenda and his gutting of federal funds for mental health and drug treatment, among other actions.
Pamela—know this: our work continues with community partners and leaders in the corrections, law enforcement, and public health fields. No matter what.
Thank you for joining us in this fight,
Nick
