Pamela: Donald Trump is attempting an illegal takeover of the United States Postal Service by firing the entire Postal Board of Governors and placing the USPS directly under the control of billionaire Trump donor and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. Trump even called this "a type of merger."
Our Postal System unites us all. Having an affordable and accessible mail service makes it possible for people to start businesses, connects our country and allows people to stay in touch with loved ones. No matter where in the country you are – rural Alaska or downtown Brooklyn – everything is just a stamp away.
The USPS shouldn't be political or politicized. It's basic infrastructure that every single American relies on and it shouldn't be dependent on the whims of a wannabe dictator. [Firstname/friend], we must stop Trump's unconstitutional power grab and keep the Postal Service in public hands. Sign to send a direct message to the Postal Board of Governors to save the Post Office from Donald Trump.
If Trump dismantles and privatizes the USPS, it would be as bad for our country as selling off our highways. The Postal Service isn't a private business nor does it belong to Trump and the White House. It belongs to the American people and has since 1970, when Congress passed the Postal Reorganization Act, explicitly removing the Postal Service from presidential control.
If Trump gets his way, postal workers, seniors, and rural Americans will bear the brunt of the devastating consequences. Over 640,000 dedicated postal employees, including 73,000 veterans, will see their livelihoods jeopardized. Rural communities risk losing guaranteed delivery of medication, Social Security checks, ballots, and other essential mail.
This isn't the first time we've stepped up to defend our Postal Service and it won't be the last. It's time to stop Trump's illegal – and unconstitutional – power grab and keep the Post Office in Americans' hands. Tell the Postal Board of Governors to stand strong, stay on the job, and save the Post Office from Donald Trump.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan
