Every year, 40 workers die completely unnecessarily from exposure to heat. It's worst for people who work outside, like farm workers and construction workers. For farm workers, employers have no legal obligation to provide water―even when they're required to be in the fields without shade for hours at a time. Heat related injuries include heat exhaustion, permanent damage to eyes, and in some cases even death. Now, with many businesses refusing to adjust their safety standards to protect workers, the Biden administration is taking action. The Department of Labor (DOL) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have introduced a new heat standard rule titled Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings. If implemented, this new rule would protect workers from extreme heat by ensuring breaks, shade, and water on the job. Greedy employers are mobilizing to oppose this new rule―we need to show regulators that we have the workers' backs! Add your name today! Thank you, Mike Phelan Progress America |
