Much of his wealth comes from his companies' billions of dollars worth of government contracts across 17 different federal agencies. The New York Times laid out the extensive entanglements between Musk, his companies, and the federal government, just as the billionaire has come under scrutiny for his pledge to give away $1 million a day to a voter in a swing state ahead of the election. And Trump has promised Musk a role in his administration to "reduce waste and needless government regulation." When a few billionaires can have such a major influence in our political system, it threatens our democracy. Congress must rein in Musk by raising taxes on the ultra-wealthy and corporations. Musk's massive fortune and the clear conflicts of interest Musk would have in any White House role are serious dangers to our democracy.
