Pamela, it's that time of year again.
We're just six days from Election Day and if your inbox looks anything like mine, you're drowning in emails from political campaigns asking you to fund their final TV ad of the cycle.
I'm writing to share something totally different.
It's a story about a voter in Georgia named Eugenia. She believed she was the victim of a voter roll purge after being told her registration was canceled – and that she wasn't the only one. From the volume of provisional ballots that were being cast, it was clear Eugenia was right. But the counting rules for those ballots in Georgia did not guarantee that her ballot – or anyone else who got caught in the same situation – would be counted as cast.
So Common Cause went to court.
Because we had the resources ready, we were able to quickly file a lawsuit demanding an emergency injunction to ensure that the state took extra measures to count the provisional ballots. And WE WON!
The state was ordered to set up a hotline and take extra review measures to ensure that all lawful provisional ballots were counted.
But we didn't stop there.
We then moved to fix the law – successfully pushing bills that improve both the security of the voter registration system and the provisional balloting protections offered to Georgia voters.
Without the help of Common Cause members taking action for what's right, thousands of voters just like Eugenia would have been silenced. And the worst part? Since then, anti-voter politicians have only doubled down on their efforts to make voting harder.
This is a blatant attack on our most fundamental right: the right to vote. Common Cause won't let that stand, and we're pushing back by training thousands of Election Protection volunteers. But we're running out of the resources we need.
We have 10,000 volunteers that need to be trained, equipped with resources, and placed before Election Day. And at $50 per volunteer, that means we need to raise $500,000 in less than a week.
There's no time to waste – we're just DAYS away from Election Day. It costs just $50 dollars to train one Election Protection volunteer, who will then go on to support hundreds of voters casting their votes, free from intimidation, suppression, and confusion at the polls. Can you chip in $50 now? >>
