No pay raises for Congress! [Sign the petition]

Did you see our email last week? Republicans are just one floor vote away from giving themselves a pay raise.

Sign the petition to stop the GOP's self-serving agenda: No raise for Congress until parents get a raise!

Dear MoveOn member,

Did you see our email earlier? While countless families struggle to make ends meet, some politicians are focusing on their own bank accounts. Republicans are just one floor vote away from giving themselves a pay raise as they shamefully continue to deny American families and children the financial relief they need and deserve.

Everyday families are facing impossible decisions between putting food on the table, paying medical bills, and keeping a roof over their heads—all while the politicians we elected are focused on giving themselves an $8,000 raise. Meanwhile, the GOP continues to block the American Family Act of 2023, which would give parents a $3,600 raise by bringing back the popular and effective Child Tax Credit. Our tax dollars should be invested back into our families, not used to line the pockets of greedy politicians.

We must act now. The legislative session is ending just next month. We can't allow politicians to give themselves a huge pay raise without first passing commonsense tax relief for working- and middle-class families. Join more than 28K MoveOn members who have signed the petition demanding no pay raise for Congress unless parents get a pay raise! And pass it along to your friends, family members, and colleagues who would also benefit from the Child Tax Credit.

Thanks for all you do.

Tell House Republicans: No raise for Congress until parents get a raise!

Dear MoveOn member,

As inflation raised the cost of everyday living, and when American families needed it the most, hard-working parents were dealt a cruel blow when Republicans voted to end the monthly Child Tax Credit. The tax credit made it more affordable for parents to start a family or keep their families afloat, and an additional year of the Child Tax Credit was projected to create 500,000 new full-time private-sector jobs.1 It's proof that investing directly in working- and middle-class families fuels our economy—what's good for hard-working parents is good for all of us.

But after betraying American families and ending the expanded Child Tax Credit—a $3,600 annual pay raise for parents—House Republicans turned around to give themselves an $8,000 annual pay raise.2

Fortunately, House Democrats have introduced the American Family Act of 2023, which would permanently restore the expanded Child Tax Credit. We can't let this critical relief for families be blocked by greedy politicians who prioritize their own self-interest over the well-being of hard-working families.

Will you sign the petition to demand that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans give families a raise before they greedily vote to line their own pockets?

It's time to hold Congress accountable. Members of Congress already make $174,000 a year—more than double the average household income in the United States.3 Yet House Republicans shamefully chose to end commonsense tax relief for working- and middle-class families, while moving to give themselves a huge pay raise.

Sign the petition to say no to pay raises for Congress until parents get the pay raise they deserve!

The impact of the Child Tax Credit was undeniable. It provided much-needed relief to working- and middle-class families, and it allowed us to pay for basic needs like food, rent, utilities, and education. Before the Child Tax Credit was ripped away by House Republicans, it lifted 3 million children out of poverty and led to a drastic drop in food insufficiency for families. It was one of the most significant accomplishments of the first year of the Biden administration.4

A few greedy Republicans should not be allowed to block needed relief for our families while giving themselves a pay raise. Sign the petition and demand Congress give parents a $3,600 pay raise by reinstating the expanded Child Tax Credit through the American Families Act of 2023 before they vote to give themselves an $8,000 raise.

Together, we can send a strong message to Congress and tell House Republicans that we expect and demand that they put our families first!

Thanks for all you do.

Want to support MoveOn's work? Book bans have skyrocketed thanks to right-wing state laws which have forced teachers to remove books from their classrooms. In response, MoveOn is launching a "Banned Bookmobile," filling it with books that the far right has banned, and driving it around to hand out those books, for free, in highly trafficked areas that will attract media attention. To keep the Banned Bookmobile up and running into 2024, we need your help.
