On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on a bill that would codify both same-sex and interracial marriage into federal law. 157 Republicans voted against it.1
The bill was written explicitly to combat the clarion call made by Clarence Thomas in the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade that Supreme Court decisions about LGBTQ+ marriage, access to contraception, and consensual relationships between LGBTQ+ people should all be overturned as well.2
And 157 Republicans, including would-be Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy, voted against protecting the equal rights of millions of Americans.
We simply cannot allow a party fueled by bigotry, racism, and hatred to control our government. Which is why MoveOn is investing $30 million, the largest amount for a midterm election in our 23-year history, to stop them. But we can do it only with your support. Andra, the GOP has shown us exactly who they are and exactly what they will do in power. Refusing to believe them would be a death sentence for our democracy.
They will pass a federal abortion ban.
They will ban contraception.
They will outlaw LGBTQ+ marriage.
They will overturn Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court case that made interracial marriage legal.
They will pass draconian voter suppression laws in an effort to keep Black people, Indigenous people, people of color, poor communities, and young people from accessing a ballot—and in turn, ensuring that the GOP can steal as many elections as they want.
It is not a question of if—given the opportunity, they absolutely will.
Which is why MoveOn has taken unprecedented steps to stop them.
We are investing millions of dollars into low-profile, often unknown—but critically important—secretary of state races to ensure that Donald Trump is not able to sneak his Big Lie-believing cronies into the offices that have the power to control our elections.
We have developed an innovative polling and message-testing system to identify the precise ads, slogans, issues, and more that will best engage what we are calling "surge voters," those people who voted for the first time in 2018 or 2020 and who, if they turn out again, will win the election for Democrats.
And at the end of this month, we will be launching our all-out effort to organize MoveOn's millions of members on the ground in the key states and districts that Democrats need to carry to maintain control of the House, expand their majority in the Senate, and stop far-right governors from putting a stranglehold on the residents of states like Texas, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Michigan.
