Friend, Today marks Juneteenth -- which is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, and Emancipation Day. This occasion commemorates the day that the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas and fully ended slavery in the confederate states -- it is a day of liberty, and a day to recommit to ending systematic racism in America. On June 19th, 1865 -- more than TWO YEARS after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation -- Union Troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with news that enslaved African-Americans would be freed from the chains of captivity. Today is a reminder of the fights to create enduring change that still lie ahead. Lawmakers have advanced legislation to undermine Black enfranchisement. Black Americans continue to face brutal violence at the hands of the police. And we still have so much work left to do to end mass incarceration, to better our public schools in underserved communities, to demand justice for historic and systematic wrongs, and to protect the promise of prosperity for EVERY American. Today we take time to reflect on where we are, where we have been, and where we must go to realize this better future -- and that is why we are so grateful to our representatives in Congress, and President Biden, for enshrining this day indelibly in our history as a federal holiday. So as we remember, let us all stand firm in our resolve and our commitment to ending the violent scourge of racism and discrimination in America. | From the DCCC team, Happy Juneteenth | Paid for by the DCCC | 430 South Capitol Street SE, Washington, DC 20003 | (202) 863-1500 | www.dccc.org | Not authorized by any candidate or candidate's committee. | This message was sent to: kmyers209.shamrock5@blogger.com | If you'd like to sign up for emails in a different account, click here. We’re working hard to make sure we protect our Democratic Majority -- and to put an end to Republicans' obstruction for good. President Biden can't do it all.
