DeSantis is no exception. After the Florida Senate rushed a bill banning transgender youth from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity through the Florida Legislature, DeSantis signed it into law. Gov. DeSantis is one of seven governors — including Gov. Greg Gianforte in Montana, Gov. Kay Ivey in Alabama, Gov. Jim Justice in West Virginia, Gov. Tate Reeves in Mississippi, Gov. Bill Lee in Tennessee, and Gov. Asa Hutchinson in Arkansas — who have signed anti-transgender legislation this session. There are more than 250 anti-LGBTQ bills under consideration in state legislatures nationwide. Of those, more than 120 directly target transgender people and at least 66, including the bill DeSantis has signed into law, ban transgender girls from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity. He recently signed a voter suppression law that makes it significantly harder for underrepresented communities to vote. With severely restricted access to mail voting, a ban on passing out food or water to voters in line, and more power granted to election officials to throw out ballots, the law erodes a central pillar of democratic governance. DeSantis's instincts for progress couldn't be worse. In addition to his anti-LGBTQ laws and disenfranchisement of Florida voters, he signed a law to intimidate peaceful protesters and silence dissent. His dangerous actions must be called out.
