Tell Congress: "We demand federal regulation of corporate for-profit satellites orbiting Earth's atmosphere. We can't let companies like Amazon and SpaceX treat Earth's orbital environment like a wild west gold rush." | Amazon doesn't just dominate online sales, they dominate the market of the physical internet itself. Amazon's cloud computing service, AWS, owns nearly half the world's public cloud infrastructure. But that's not enough for Amazon: now they want to own the sky too. Amazon announced plans to launch over 3,000 satellites into Earth's orbital environment to beef up its de facto monopoly on cloud computing. This is a plan to flood outer space with satellites before Congress regulates it. Congress must act! Sign the petition: Tell Congress to step in and regulate Amazon satellites! Right now, Earth's orbital environment is the new "wild west" gold rush for tech giants. Amazon and SpaceX are neck-deep in a space race to decide who controls internet infrastructure. Regardless of who wins, consumers, business owners, and everyday internet users are sure to lose. Amazon already has a stranglehold on online retail, shipping and distribution, streaming content, and cloud computing. Now they want to dominate Earth's orbit, and fast, before Congress can pass any sort of meaningful regulation. Jeff Bezos's $200 billion fortune depends on maintaining his monopoly on internet infrastructure―that's what these thousands of satellites are for. Here's the worst part: Astronomers are warning the FCC that the effect of so many private satellites launching into orbit could "fundamentally change" astronomy. In every other industry, letting corporations "regulate themselves" has been a complete disaster. But the internet has become too essential to everyday life, democracy, and basic commerce -- especially during a pandemic -- to let Amazon quietly amass total domination. For Amazon "the sky's the limit" isn't a folksy turn of phrase, it's a dare. That's why we need Congress to wake up, step in, and rein back the tech monster that Amazon's turned into. Sign the petition: Tell Congress to step in and regulate Amazon satellites! Thanks, Team Progress |
