RE: Donald Trump

I was concerned when I wrote fundraising appeals for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee over the last several years that people might think I was over-promising about the benefits to the country of a Democratic House Majority. I am very happy to say that the opposite is the case. In three months, my former colleagues and those who have joined them have not only blocked the right-wing-controlled Republican Party from doing further damage -- for example, their plans to further enrich the wealthiest through tax changes -- they have acted affirmatively to change the national debate in a healthy direction. On two major issues that Republicans have stifled during their control -- gun violence prevention and electoral reform -- Democrats have passed comprehensive legislation that puts the difference between the parties at the center of the national debate. They have blocked Donald Trump’s obsession with an ill-advised wall and followed that up by repudiating his unconstitutional emergency decree, forcing the first significant detection from some Senate Republicans from his dominance. But thus every success raises the stakes for the next election. Republicans are already using these Democratic efforts to frighten their core supporters into increased giving, beyond the large amounts they have already provided. Their richest donors, in fact, seek to ensure that there will not be a future Democratic Congress that puts restraints on their disproportionate clout. As the quarter ends this week, our hardworking friends at the DCCC need to be able to show the Democratic members that their work is being noticed, and that they will have the resources to continue it.
