Pamela, In this election year, as we prepare to choose our nation's next leader, let's also acknowledge that the way we select presidents is deeply stupid. The Electoral College is a relic from a time before America had a truly national identity, allowing states to essentially dictate the outcome of presidential elections. In fact, more than half of our modern presidents have taken office despite receiving fewer popular votes than their competitors. It's past time for us to make a change.
