With only 27 days left until polls close, we want to tell you about one of the most powerful and effective tactics we have to reach voters with crucial information reminding them to get out and vote by November 8.
How effective is it? Ninety percent of voters who receive these messages will read them within three minutes after they are delivered.
That's right, 90%. In comparison, only about 10% of the people who receive this email will ever read it (thanks for being one of them!).
MoveOn pioneered this program back in 2018. "Text Every Democrat," as the name suggests, involved hundreds of MoveOn volunteers personally texting tens of millions of registered Democratic voters to remind them to cast a ballot. We've brought the program back this year, and in the next 27 days, we have a goal of texting a total of 34 million Democrats to get them to the polls.
You read that correctly: 34 million. And these are not text messages that are sent in bulk by an IT person clicking a button behind the scenes. No, these are text messages sent personally, by real people, one at a time. And if a recipient has a question about voting, trained MoveOn volunteers are on hand to personally respond.
But these messages are not free to send. In fact, it is going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in these final days to get this done—but we know how effective these messages can be, and in an election as critical as this one, every single thing counts.
Andra, with each passing election, the traditional means of contacting voters, through phone banks and door-to-door canvassing, become less and less effective—particularly for the precise voters Democrats need to turn out to win.
We know that the key to winning in November is by turning out so-called "surge voters," meaning those voters who voted for the first time in 2018 and 2020. Surge voters are made up of young people, people of color, poor people, and other marginalized voters—and together, they will propel Democrats to victory across the country.
And these voters are far more likely to read a text message than they are to answer a phone call or even a knock on the door, which is why "Text Every Democrat" is such an important campaign. It's not just texting 34 million Democratic voters. It's texting the right ones, with the right message, at the right time.
But purchasing the data, building the systems, analyzing the data, and organizing a massive volunteer effort doesn't come cheap. Indeed, we estimate that it will cost around $300,000.
