They plan to win by any means necessary

Let's be honest, not many of us pay a lot of attention to secretary of state races.

Dear MoveOn member,

Let's be honest, not many of us pay a lot of attention to secretary of state races.

In fact, the last time most of us heard about a secretary of state trying to steal an election was in 2000, when Katherine Harris prematurely certified Florida's election results for George W. Bush and then refused to recount the ballots.1

But then 2020 happened.

After losing at the ballot box, Trump and his allies made Harris and Bush look like featherweights. Strong-arming election officials to throw out Democratic ballots and "find" Republican votes. Making up fake electors to send to Washington, D.C. Summoning a white supremacist mob to attack the U.S. Capitol.2

We stopped that coup, of course. But little did we realize that while we were protecting our democracy, Trump was simply using it as a dress rehearsal for 2024.

Here's what Trump said in Michigan at an endorsement rally for his chosen candidate for secretary of state, Kristina Karamosa: "This is not just about 2022. This is about making sure Michigan is not rigged and stolen again in 2024."3

That's why MoveOn is doing something we have never done in our 23-year history: We're investing millions of dollars into defeating Trump-backed candidates for secretary of state and electing individuals who will ensure fair elections.

Will you help ensure the success of our efforts to defend democracy by donating $3 today? Your contribution is crucial to ensure that Trump doesn't return to the White House in 2024.

Yes, I'll chip in.

By installing Trump loyalists as overseers of state elections in 2022, he knows his people will be the ones certifying the results in 2024. Or, at a minimum, will impose racist voter suppression laws that disenfranchise communities of color, people with disabilities, and low-income voters.

People like Mark Finchem in Arizona, who was with the insurrectionists on Capitol Hill on January 6th and is a member of the white supremacist Oath Keepers.4

Or Jim Marchant in Nevada, who blames election fraud for his loss in 2020 and who openly declares he would not have certified the election results for Joe Biden.5

Or Kristina Karamosa, mentioned above, who still believes Trump is president and claims she saw fraud in Detroit where none existed.6

Without overstating it, stopping Trump from returning to the White House in 2024 may well depend on the unprecedented work MoveOn is planning to do in the next three months.

But make no mistake, we can only do this together. MoveOn's superpower is its grassroots members in every corner of the country who work hard every day to make a difference. And, in critical states like Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, and more, MoveOn is the only nationwide grassroots organization currently working to defeat Trump's hand-picked candidates.

But organizing takes money. And as a grassroots organization, our financial resources also come from you—tens of thousands of people across the country chipping in whatever they can. So please, will you chip in $3 to help sustain the effort to defeat Trump's candidates for secretary of state?

Remember, Trump ultimately failed to overturn the 2020 election because a few election officials—secretaries of state in particular—rightfully certified the results despite heavy pressure from him and his enablers to overturn them.

If Trump and Steve Bannon succeed in 2022, Trump may well retake the White House in 2024.7 But we have the power to stop him.

Thanks for all you do.

Donald Trump and his allies are methodically enacting a plan to place some of Trump's most ardent supporters in key election offices that oversee vote counting, have the power to certify—or decertify—election results, and declare election winners and losers.
