The billionaires funding Trump's Big Lie

The November election is 100 days away, and the survival of our democracy is on the line.

Dear MoveOn member,

The November election is 100 days away, and the survival of our democracy is on the line.

That's not hyperbole. Here's the deal: We all remember how Donald Trump tried to steal the 2020 election by pressuring local election officials to "find" the extra votes he needed to win. But they wouldn't go along, and the coup failed.

But now, Trump is putting the pieces in place to try again in 2024, and the key to his plan is to use this November's midterm elections to install cronies in the key state and local offices that oversee elections, count votes, and declare who won.

And it's not just Trump behind the effort this time. Right-wing billionaire Peter Thiel has donated tens of millions to support Big Lie candidates, and a dark-money group run by Steve Bannon called the America First Secretary of State Coalition is collecting donations from megadonors like the founder of MyPillow and the former CEO of Overstock.com to help Trump's Big Lie candidates win.1

With so much at stake, MoveOn is doing something we've never done before in our history: We're running a multimillion-dollar campaign to defeat these Big Lie candidates for secretary of state. Will you make a $3 donation to help support this critical effort?

Yes, I'll chip in.

So far, Republicans have nominated Trump-backed Big Lie conspiracy theorists for key statewide election administration offices in Pennsylvania and Nevada. His secretary of state candidates are heavy favorites for the Republican nomination in Arizona and Michigan, which are holding their primaries over the next two weeks.

All together, those states represent 61 electoral votes that went to President Biden in 2020—and that Trump would be positioned to steal in 2024 if his candidates win in November.

In Arizona, the leading Republican candidate is Trump-endorsed Mark Finchem, a member of the white supremacist group the Oath Keepers, who tried to decertify President Joe Biden's win in the state and attended the January 6 insurrection.2

In Nevada, the Republican candidate is insurrectionist Jim Marchant, a member of Nevada's fake slate of pro-Trump electors seeking to overturn President Biden's victory in 2020.3

In Michigan, Trump has endorsed Kristina Karamo, a far-right conspiracy theorist who claims that demonic possession can be sexually transmitted. Karamo to this day continues to spread the absurd lie that Trump is the true president of the U.S.4

And in Pennsylvania, where the secretary of state is appointed by the governor, the Republican candidate for governor is Doug Mastriano, who as a state senator tried to steal Pennsylvania's electoral votes for Trump by appointing a slate of "alternative" pro-Trump electors.5

Donald Trump is making no secret of his plans to run for president again. He's even been dropping hints that he might announce before this November's midterm elections. If even one or two of these candidates win the general election in November, Trump will have the pieces in place to steal the White House in 2024.

That's why MoveOn is doing something we've never done in our 23-year history: We're launching a multimillion-dollar effort to defeat these Trump-backed candidates for secretary of state across the country and save our democracy before it's too late.

It's 100 days till Election Day, and we're counting on support from MoveOn members to fully fund this campaign. Will you make a $3 donation? Every dollar counts.

Yes, I'll chip in.

Thanks for all you do.

Donald Trump and his allies are methodically enacting a plan to place some of Trump's most ardent supporters in key election offices that oversee vote counting, have the power to certify—or decertify—election results, and declare election winners and losers.
