Last month, Democratic state senators in Missouri made national news when they filibustered for a record-breaking 50 hours.
Why? Some of their colleagues were trying to make it harder for voters to amend Missouri's constitution at the ballot box — all in an effort aimed at weakening our democracy and thwarting an upcoming potential ballot measure on abortion rights.
Those lawmakers would rather stifle voters' voices by changing the rules than actually listen to the people they were elected to serve.
With your support, the fair maps movement had the backs of the senators who filibustered — and democracy won. Together, we defeated an attempt to require up to 75% approval from voters for a ballot measure to pass.
Now, if it feels like we're playing a game of whack-a-mole, it's no coincidence. Anti-democracy politicians' state-by-state strategy is designed to exhaust us. They are hoping we'll get tired, tune out, and go home.
