Tell Congress: "For democracy to work for all of us, every person must have their voice heard and be allowed to vote. ADD YOUR NAME to demand the end of felony disenfranchisement, so that returning citizens can exercise their rights to vote!" | Friend, This country is not evenly divided politically—one side just works to prevent the other side from being counted at the polls. The official position of the Republican party: get rid of the vote. The entire Republican strategy is about making it harder for us to vote, especially if you are Black, Brown, or poor. At every turn, Republicans have used their power to decrease the number of Americans who can vote, and to overturn the will of the people who disagree. They've been gerrymandering majority Black voter districts for decades, pushing voter ID laws, using intimidation at the polls, sowing chaos and misinformation about mail in ballots. Trump's stooges on the Supreme Court have been knocking down voter rights and rewriting voter laws every day this week. In Florida in 2018, voters overwhelmingly passed an amendment to restore the right to vote to citizens returning to society after incarceration—yet Republicans in the legislature have made the implementation onerous, forcing returning citizens to pay unspecified fines or face additional felony charges. The state of Florida can't tell them what they owe, yet they use those amounts to prevent returning citizens from voting. Voting must be a right if we are to live up to our country's founding ideals. You can help restore democracy starting with the 6 millions of Americans who do not have the right to vote because they have been convicted of a crime. Will you add your name to end felony disenfranchisement laws? Criminal justice and voting disenfranchisement disproportionately affect Black and brown people. We lock up more Black people in this country than any other country, and it is absolutely no accident that those same Black citizens are then stripped of their right to vote. They deserve to have their voices heard and counted. We are two days away from a pivotal election, and in its aftermath we all will need to look in the mirror and figure out how to prevent our country from getting back to the dangerous, anti-democratic place we are in now. Restoring the right to vote to returning citizens is a good place to start. You can help restore voting rights and expand voting access by ending felon disenfranchisement voting laws. Sign to add your name. Everyone should have the right to vote, and every vote should count. In Solidarity, Mike Phelan Progress America |
