The night before the 2008 Iowa caucuses, I went to a senior home in Des Moines and I started knocking on doors, reminding folks to head out and caucus.
At one of the apartment units, a petite Black woman in her 80's opened the door just wide enough for me to ask her if she would caucus for Barack Obama. She looked at me with a straight face and said, "They're not gonna let him win."
As I looked back at her, I thought about what her life had required her to endure and witness. All the injustices she had experienced. All of the indignities. And that night, she was holding on to her dignity. She was not about to endure another disappointment.
I stayed and talked with her, she talked more with me. Inch by inch, as the door opened wider, she opened up to the idea of hope.
She wanted to believe in change, but more importantly, she believed in herself. She wanted to believe in what could be, unburdened by what had been.
And guess who showed up in Barack Obama's corner the next night at the caucus?
But I want to be clear: this isn't 2008. The stakes are even higher now that Donald Trump is in office.
We are in a fight for the soul of our country. I need to know right now if you're in it with me.
