They stopped Trump's allies from pushing through a map designed to lock in partisan advantage and silence voters before a single ballot could be cast.
That is a huge victory — not just for Indiana, but for everyone watching what happens next.
Here's the truth: Donald Trump and his political allies are testing a dangerous playbook across the country. They're pressuring state leaders to redraw voting maps in the middle of the decade whenever it serves their political goals — no new Census, no public need, just raw power grabs.
And for weeks, Indiana looked like the next domino to fall. But thanks to Hoosiers speaking up — and lawmakers who were willing to put people above politics — that didn't happen.
Indiana showed the nation that voters still matter.

In Texas, politicians have already rushed through a mid-decade redraw designed to add five new seats for their party in the next election. And the U.S. Supreme Court said that was okay.
And now Florida lawmakers are preparing to follow the same playbook — pushing forward a mid-decade gerrymander that would carve out even more GOP seats from Trump at the expense of Black and brown voters.
This can't become our new normal: where politicians redraw the lines whenever they feel threatened, lock in power before voters have a chance to weigh in, and dare us to stop them.
That might not be as flashy as Trump going on TV and declaring himself dictator-for-life, but make no mistake, it would have the same effect. That's why Common Cause has been preparing for this moment for years.
We've fought gerrymandering in courts, in legislatures, and in communities across the country. And we'll continue standing with states like Indiana, where leaders — regardless of party — choose to defend fair representation and listen to their constituents.
