Dear MoveOn member,
Ten minutes.
That's how long Donald Trump said it would take for him to roll back protections from toxic copper mining for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness during a rally this summer.1
And that's not all. We reviewed the plans laid out in Project 2025—supported by Trump and Senator JD Vance—and they would spell disaster for public lands and the environment, including the Boundary Waters.2
Will you sign the petition to oppose Trump and Vance's anti-Boundary Waters platform?
The Environmental Protection Agency has called copper mining one of our country's "most toxic" industries.3 That's why, when Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland, under the Biden-Harris administration, issued a public land order banning sulfide-ore copper mining on federal land in the headwaters of the Boundary Waters for the next 20 years, it was a significant milestone and win.
The damage of Trump and Vance overturning these protections and reinstating sulfide-ore mining could pollute the Boundary Waters beyond repair—and have a devastating ripple effect on the ecosystem and communities that depend on it. Overturning these protections could also make local residents vulnerable to toxic chemicals including mercury, arsenic, and lead.4
Add your name to protect our public lands and save the Boundary Waters from Project 2025!
The Boundary Waters is the largest wilderness east of the Rockies and north of the Everglades. It is the most-visited federally designated wilderness area in the United States, with over 250,000 people exploring the breathtaking outdoors there every year. We can't let this unique, federally protected area be destroyed.
Project 2025—the sweeping policy agenda for a second Trump term created by the right-wing Heritage Foundation and supported by many conservative candidates and Trump allies—would put the Boundary Waters in jeopardy.
On page 523 of Project 2025, it explicitly lists overturning the mining ban near the Boundary Waters.5
We know that Trump would ignore the overwhelming public support for the Boundary Waters, reject science and the law, and open the Boundary Waters headwaters to toxic mining. We need to make it clear that threatening this protected land is a losing strategy.
This isn't the first time the Boundary Waters has been under threat. For decades, the public has had to come together and protect it against logging and mining. And we've been successful, securing major local and federal wins over the years to preserve this vital wilderness. We can—and must—do it again.
The decisions we make in this election will determine whether we defend or endanger the Boundary Waters. We must work to elect champions at all levels of government, and reject any attempts to roll back hard-earned and necessary protections.
