“We have a chance to have a district that gives us a little more voice”

Fair maps create powerful opportunities for more voters to be engaged in the electoral process.

Pamela,

Take a look at this headline — and keep reading for more background on how we got here:

The ruling:
The 2023 ruling in the Supreme Court case Allen v. Milligan enforced a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act and directly led to more representative maps — including a redraw of Alabama's 2nd Congressional District.

The Supreme Court agreed that Alabama had likely illegally diluted the influence of Black voters when drawing congressional lines. Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, proudly supported some of the Alabama voters in this case as they fought to ensure their voices would be heard.

The map:
Judges reshaped the district which now spans across lower Alabama from the Mississippi border to the Georgia border. Black residents, who used to make up just 30% of the district, now make up nearly 49% of the voting-age population.

The impact:
The ruling safeguarded the rights of Black voters — and the fair map paves the way for increased representation of Black Alabamians.

Right now in Alabama, there is a heated race for the new 2nd Congressional District. Even more than the headline, read one Alabama voter's take on the impact of the new map:

***

"Ira Stallworth, a 59-year-old retired educator who met both candidates in Tuskegee, said the race has already produced something new: attention. She said the area has often been overlooked by candidates in the past when it was part of a GOP stronghold.
"'We have a chance to have a district that gives us a little more voice'"

By working to ensure that everyone has a voice in our democracy, we can make progress on issue after issue.

Whether you care about making sure everyone has access to quality, affordable health care, achieving equal pay, reducing the gun violence that plagues our schools and communities, protecting voting rights, or dealing with the urgent threat of climate change, there is a fundamental structural barrier that prevents progress on these issues: manipulated electoral maps drawn with surgical precision by politicians to preserve their party's political power and silence the will of the people.

But what's happening in Alabama makes it clear: Together, if we continue to fight against gerrymandering and push for fair maps in redistricting, we can ensure voters across the country have the opportunity to elect leaders who better represent their values. Can we count on you to support the All On The Line campaign by making a contribution today?

Fair maps create powerful opportunities for more voters to be engaged in the electoral process. Restoring fairness to our democracy ensures that every American has an equal say in our government.

Thank you,
Team AOTL
